Perast is a beautiful part of the UNESCO cultural heritage of Kotor with only about 350 inhabitants, but 19 churches and 18 palaces. The baroque architecture of the place represents one of the most beautiful units in the entire Adriatic. The little town of Perast is situated at the foot of St. Elijah Hill (873 m), opposite the narrow Verige strait, where the innermost bays of Risan and Kotor converge. The historical part of the city of Perast has no defensive walls instead it is defended by 9 defensive fortified towers, the most important of which is the tower of St. Luke. The city plan is quite simple. One long street leads through the city along the coast, and from it, staircases lead to higher parts. In the city center, there is a square (Pjaca) dominated by the church of St. Nicholas with its impressive bell tower 55 meters high. The church was never finished due to lack of money. Today, in the sacristies of the unfinished church there is a treasury and a museum.
If you look from Perast towards the Bay of Kotor, you will see two islands that seem to swim on the sea surface, acting unreal even to those who have seen them before, Our Lady of the Rocks and the island of St. George. Legend has it that on July 22, 1452, sailors, on a rock in the middle of the sea, found an icon of the Virgin Mary with a child. From that day on, it was a tradition for sailors, upon returning from a successful voyage, to lay stones along the coast of Our Lady of the Rocks. For centuries, this man-made island was created. Its foundations in the depths of the bay hide hundreds of worn-out sailing ships, which are filled with stone and submerged so that the island still stands above the water.
